Program Structure

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics under the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences
offers a program of study leading to Master of Science in Mathematics. The program is for two
academic years (6 semesters). Students have to complete 3 semesters in each year.

In the first year students are required to complete 30 credit hours consisting of 7 courses (14 credits)
from core courses and any 8 courses (16 credits) from elective courses.

In the second year there are two groups :
(i) General group.
(ii) Thesis group.

General group students are required to complete 33 credit hours consisting of 4 courses (12 credits)
from Area-I, 4 courses (12 credits) from Area-II, 2 courses (6 credits) from Area-III and a project /
internship of 3 credits from Area-IV.

The normal workload is 12 credits in each of 1st and 2nd semesters, other credits and a
project/internship in the 3rd semester. This may be relaxed only with special permission of appropriate
authority of BUBT.

Thesis group students are required to complete 36 credit hours consisting of 4 courses (12 credits)
from Area-I, 4 courses (12 credits) from Area-II, 2 courses (6 credits) from Area-III. Each thesis group
student has to write a thesis on a topic under the guidance of a supervisor and a co-supervisor, subject
to prior approval of the topic and the supervisor by the university authority. There are 6 credits for
thesis work.
