The 3rd Convocation of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) was held at International Convention City (ICCB) on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.
His Excellency Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid, Hon’ble President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of BUBT, presided over the Convocation Ceremony and conferred the degrees upon the graduating students.Former Chairman of the UGC and Emeritus Professor of the University of Dhaka Dr. A.K. Azad Chowdhurywaspresent as the Convocation Speaker.Professor Abdul Mannan, Hon’ble Chairman (State Minister Status), University Grants Commission ofBangladesh was present at the Ceremony as the Special Guest. Mr. A F M Sarwar Kamal, Chairman, BUBT Trust delivered his speech.Professor Md. Abu Saleh, Vice Chancellor delivered the Welcome Speech. Six thousand and three hundred thirty five graduating students were awarded graduation and post graduation degrees and four graduating students were awarded gold medals for their outstanding academic achievements.
The opening ceremony started with National Anthem and recitation from the Holy Quran. Afterwards,Hon’ble President and Chancellor of BUBT declared the Convocation open. Professor Md. Abu Saleh, Vice Chancellor addressed the graduating students and in his welcome speech he said, “The bond that has been established between you and your university-BUBT, is a permanent one. You are important to us not only for the present, but also for the future”. He also said, “At present BUBT is one of the leading universities in the Private Sector of Bangladesh. It has established itself as a top ranking Private University in the country by fulfilling all the requirements of the Private University Act 2010 and complying with all other Rules and Regulations of the Ministry of Education and University Grants Commission. Now, BUBT is a brand for quality education at home and abroad.”. He also said, “Convocation is a milestone in the life of a student. But it is also considered as the preparation for your practical life and the beginning of your professional careers. From today you are stepping into the more competitive world of the 21st Century that is very difficult in nature. Therefore, you must be prepared to face even greater challenges in future.”
Mr. A F M Sarwar Kamal, Chairman, BUBT Trust said, “The Convocation ceremony will remain as an unforgettable memory in your life. You are going to enter a new phase of life from here.” After remembering the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman’s contribution to the Education sector, He also said, “Certificates you have achieved today will be valuable only when you will be able to capitalize on it and be successful in life. As young graduates, you are about to embark on your own extraordinary journey and enter a new life full of adventures. I am hopeful that you will be able to face reality of life with courage and credibility.”
Emeritus Professor of the University of Dhaka Dr. A.K. Azad Chowdhury emphasized on innovation, He said, “The role of the university in the 21st century has undergone a radical change, many scholars in the west believe that present day university’s main responsibility is to produce global work force rather than engage in the creation of new knowledge. I don’t subscribe to the view fully. But I agree that the university’s main responsibility is to produce global work force along with the creation of new knowledge.” He also said, “You have acquired necessary knowledge and skills from the university to embark on new journey to a bigger life. In this new world of technology and innovation you should engage yourselves with the new technology and update your knowledge and skill.” After noticing the country’s economic growth he said, “We need leadership quality, management skills and technological innovation. Your university is doing exactly the same through imparting knowledge and skills.” He said, “Unleash your hidden energy to face eventuality and adversity in life in a way they did. Then the success will be yours.”
Professor Abdul Mannan said, “I am delighted to know that, From the UGC, we recently sent letters of thanks to 12 private universities including BUBT for starting their academic program in permanent campuses within the stipulated time frame. It is also satisfying to note that BUBT is committed to imparting quality education at an affordable cost.” He also said, “I congratulate the graduating students, their guardians and teachers as well as BUBT authority on successful completion of studies. I call upon the new graduates to use your acquired knowledge in the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.”
Afterwards, Hon’ble President and Chancellor of BUBT conferred the degrees upon the graduating students presented by fourDeans of the University with the announcement by Dr. Md. Harun-Or-Rashid, Registrar, BUBT, and awarded Chancellor’s Gold Medal toMd. MukibHossen, B.Sc in CSE, 25th Intake and Mohammad TanvirHasanChowdhury, EMBA, 24th Intake for their academic achievements. Then Mr. A F M Sarwar Kamal, Chairman, BUBT Trust handed over a Crest to the Hon’ble President.
Hon’ble President and Chancellor of BUBT Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid urged students to stand against terrorism and militancy aiming to build a “Sonar Bangla” envisioned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman.
He also asked them to ensure that terrorism and militancy have no room in Bangladesh.
Honorable President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, said “the new graduates must contribute to building a happy and prosperous country being imbued with the spirit of patriotism, firmness of character, social responsibility and professionalism.”
He advised them to keep in mind that national progress is not possible without patriotism and sacrificial attitude. “You have to come forward for the betterment of the country, which we achieved by dint of three million martyrs,” he said.
Noting that today's world has become more competitive in the 21st century at the time of an open market economy, the president asked all to enhance their expertise in using ICT apart from acquiring knowledge and efficiency aiming to reach Bangladesh to a new height globally.
He suggested for adjusting ICT with the business education to boost the country's economy.
About the private sector's investment in the country's economic activities, the president said, “Due to the investment of private entrepreneurs, new job opportunities are being created and the demand of skilled manpower in business and technology is also increasing gradually.”
He stressed the need for preparing university curriculum and teaching method time-befitting ones ensuring international standard.
Mr Abdul Hamid said that the country has already achieved a marked success in various sectors, including economic growth, per capita income, agriculture, education, health, rural infrastructure, electricity, communication, information and communication technology (ICT), trade and commerce, small and medium industries, women's empowerment, youth and sports, social security, construction of multipurpose Padma Bridge, and expansion of bank-insurance and financial sector.
He also urged the newly graduates to uphold the truth and right things and not to tarnish the dignity of their certificates, personal respect and morality as the conscience of the nation. “Never make compromise with any misdeed and untruth. And never forget your country and its people wherever you stay for your profession.”
Mohammad. AzijurRahmanFaqir, MBM, 15th Intake was awarded Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal and NigarNargisJisa, BBA, 25th Intake, was awarded BUBT Trust Chairman’s Gold Medal for their excellent results. Finally, the Convocation Ceremony came to an end through a colorful cultural program in the participation of Band Parthib, Sohag Dance Group, Tahsan and Liza among others.
Professor Dr. Shafique Ahmed Siddique, Convener, Academic Advisory Committee, Members of the BUBTTrust, Syndicate and the Academic Council, Faculty members, Graduates, Officers and students of the University were present in the Ceremony.
