Dr. Kazi Shameema Islam presents her PhD Dissertation

Dr. Kazi Shameema Islam, Assistant Professor of English, recently obtained her PhD from Islamic University of Kushtia. Her PhD thesis was on “Problems of Learning English in Bangladesh in the Perspective of Existing Social Factors”. BUBT organized a session for the presentation of her PhD dissertation at the BUBT Meeting Room on May 27, 2023. Prof. Dr. Nevin Farida of Department of English, University of Dhaka, Prof. Dr. Muhammed Fayyaz Khan, Vice Chancellor of BUBT, Prof. Santi Narayan Ghosh, Director, BUBT Research Centre, Prof. Syed Anwarul Huq, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Mohammad Shawkat Ali, Chairman, Department of English and the faculty members of department of English were present in the session.
In her dissertation, Dr. Shameema investigated the social factors causing impediments in the way of learning English by tenth grade students in Bangladesh. She found evidence of a lack of support from schools and family, needlessness of English in the surroundings, lack of resources, students’ lack of positive attitude and motivation, and their desire to only pass exams rather than learning the language as responsible aspects for low proficiency of learners in English in Bangladesh.
After her presentation, Dr. Farida, Dr. Khan, Prof. Huq, and Prof. Ghosh raised some points for more explanation. Later, the faculty members inquired about some aspects of her work. The session ended with a vote of thanks from the Chairman of Department of English.
