The Department of English arranges a Seminar on Saul Bellow

A seminar on the Nobel Laureate American novelist Saul Bellow was arranged at the International Conference Hall, BUBT, on December 07, 2019. The seminar was titled ‘Bellow’s Intellectual Heroes’. The renowned scholar and literary critic, Professor Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam, was present as the discussant. Prof. Syed Anwarul Huq, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, BUBT, presented the keynote paper at the seminar. Mohammad Shawkat Ali, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of English, presided over the event. The faculty members Ms. Dilruba, Jakiya Sultana Lime, and Kazal Kumar Das also presented their papers on the diverse aspects of Bellow’s writings. Md. Sabbir Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of English, anchored the seminar. Professor Dr. Muhammed Fayyaz Khan, Vice Chancellor of BUBT, and Wing Commander (Retd.) Md. Momenul Islam, Proctor, also graced the occasion.
The enthusiastic students of the department were present at the seminar and participated in the question-answer session. All the speakers focused on the contemporaneity of Bellow’s writing and tried to identify his heroes among the present urban people. They also pointed out the modernistic traits in the writings of Bellow. Professor Huq, in his keynote paper, analysed the characteristics of five Jewish protagonists of Bellow’s major novels, Seize the Day, The Victim, Mr. Sammler’s Planet, Herzog, and The Dean’s December. The seminar was a great success.
