Professional Summary

Professor Ali is a Professor in the Department of Data Science and Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT). He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Science, Computing and Engineering Technologies, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. From 1997 to 2024, he held academic positions from Lecturer to Professor at universities across Australia, Asia, and the South Pacific in Computer Science and Information Systems, and worked as an AI expert in Australia and Fiji. After earning his PhD in Machine Learning from Monash University in 2005, he served in leadership roles including Programme and Research Coordinator, Head of Department, Director of Research Center, Dean, and Acting Vice Chancellor. He chaired committees on programme development, ICT, recruitment, evaluation, and accreditation, and was General Chair of international conferences. He has supervised over 20 postgraduate students. He holds an h-index of 35 (Google Scholar), has authored two books, edited six, and published 150+ refereed journal and conference papers on Machine Learning, including SVM, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, and Ensemble Learning. He established two international conferences and served as Chief Editor of international journals. He secured research grants exceeding 7 million from industry, government, and international bodies such as the EU, USAID, the World Bank, Canadian agencies, and Australian industries. His awards include the Bangladesh Expatriates’ Award 2023 (Research and Innovation), Vice-Chancellor Research Excellence Award 2014, Outstanding Leadership Award 2013, and others. He is a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
