Structural Mechanics Laboratory

Department of Civil Engineering

The Structural Mechanics Laboratory is one of the core undergraduate laboratories of the Department of Civil Engineering, dedicated to the experimental study of the mechanical behavior of engineering materials and structural elements. The laboratory is equipped with both computerized and analog Universal Testing Machines along with a range of specialized apparatus for tension, compression, shear, hardness, impact, and buckling tests. It provides students with the opportunity to directly observe and measure the strength, stiffness, ductility, and failure characteristics of materials commonly used in civil engineering construction, reinforcing the theoretical concepts covered in courses such as Mechanics of Solids, Strength of Materials, and Structural Analysis.

Objectives

  • Familiarize students with standard experimental procedures used to evaluate the mechanical properties of structural and construction materials.
  • Provide hands-on experience in operating Universal Testing Machines, hardness testers, and impact testing equipment.
  • Enable students to determine key mechanical properties such as tensile strength, compressive strength, shear strength, hardness, and impact toughness.
  • Develop a practical understanding of structural phenomena such as column buckling and beam bending.
  • Bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world engineering practice through guided laboratory investigation.
  • Train students in accurate data recording, result analysis, and technical report writing.

9 Johnson's Shear Tool Apparatus 1 Set Used to determine the shear strength of engineering materials through direct shear testing.
10 Extensometer 1 Set Measures small deformations and strain in specimens during tensile and compression tests with high accuracy.
11 Compressometer 1 Set Measures compressive strain and deformation of specimens subjected to axial compression.
12 Beam Bending Test Apparatus 1 Set Evaluates the bending behavior, deflection, and flexural strength of beam specimens under different loading conditions.
