Department Overview
Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) is one of the top-ranking private universities in Bangladesh, established in 2003 under the Private University Act of 1992 (amended in 1998) with the approval of the Ministry of Education. With academic collaborations and credit transfer facilities with renowned foreign universities, BUBT is a proud member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of International Universities, and the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia.
From its inception, BUBT has been recognized as a leading private
university, offering cutting-edge education and maintaining international
academic standards. The university adheres to the guidelines of the Washington
Accord (USA), ensuring that its graduates receive a globally competitive
engineering education.
The Department of Civil Engineering at BUBT was established to
enhance the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences and address the growing
need for skilled civil engineers in Bangladesh and beyond. The department
offers a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B.Sc. in CE) program that
equips students with the knowledge, technical expertise, and problem-solving
skills needed to excel in the modern engineering field.
The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to blend theoretical
foundations with practical applications, providing students with hands-on
experience in key areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical
engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, and water
resources engineering. This program is delivered by highly qualified faculty
members, supported by advanced laboratories and modern research facilities.
BUBT’s Civil Engineering program not only prepares students for

Chairman's Message
I am very much excited
to welcome you to our flourishing Department of Civil Engineering of Bangladesh
University of Business and Technology (BUBT). BUBT is one of the top ranking
universities in Bangladesh, established in 2003 under private university act
1992 approved by the Ministry of Education. The university has academic
collaboration and credit transfer facilities with a number of foreign
Universities. BUBT is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities,
a member of the Association of International Universities and also a member of
the Association of Management Development Institution in South Asia.
It will be our pride to
explore an outstanding education world in the Department of Civil Engineering.
Right from the grand opening, it is our endeavor to make our department a
preferred destination for students who want to get to the top of this field. We
aspire to mold our students into globally competent and well-shaped Civil
Engineers who can meet the challenges of technological advancement. All efforts
are also being made to inculcate social values and professional ethics in our
students to face the current as well as future global standards.
We are targeted to
establish a well-qualified and competent faculty with well-equipped
laboratories and committed to provide an excellent teaching methodology for
nurturing the students into excellent engineers as well as good human beings.
Currently, Bangladesh
government promotes a number of infrastructure projects like atomic energy
power plant, elevated expressways, flyovers, Metrorail, subway, bus rapid
transits, airports, expansion of railway services, deep-sea port, barrage and
so many to build a strong socio-economic profile within the country. All such
projects will require huge workforce including civil engineers. Moreover, East
Asian countries like China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan,
Middle-East countries like Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Saudi
Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt and Libya,
Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and
Vietnam, North American countries like USA, Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Brazil as
well as European countries like New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, England,
Italy, French, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Luxembourg are
still having demand for the foreign civil engineers. So, our graduates will
enjoy a lot of opportunities to build bright career in Bangladesh and many
countries of the rest of the world as well.

Laboratory Facilities
Our department features seven specialized labs complemented by interdisciplinary access to Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering workshops. This collaborative environment ensures students gain comprehensive, hands-on experience across all civil engineering disciplines.
Structural Mechanics Laboratory
Located in Building 1, this lab features a 1000 kN Universal Testing Machine for strength testing steel and polymers. It includes advanced data acquisition tools for analyzing structural component behavior.
Engineering Materials Laboratory
Located on the ground floor of Building 1, this spacious facility is fully equipped for casting structural elements and performing routine quality tests on concrete and its constituent materials.
Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory
The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is a core undergraduate facility dedicated to evaluating the physical, index, and engineering properties of soils. Equipped with modern testing apparatus, it provides students with hands-on experience in assessing soil strength, compressibility, permeability, and compaction under various loading conditions. The laboratory bridges the gap between theory and practice for courses like Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, and Foundation Engineering, while also supporting undergraduate research and industrial quality control testing.
Water Resource Engineering Laboratory
The Water Resources Engineering (WRE) Laboratory is a core undergraduate facility focusing on the experimental study of fluid mechanics and open-channel hydraulics. Equipped with modern testing apparatus, it gives students hands-on experience measuring and analyzing fluid flow, pressure distribution, head loss, and hydraulic structures. These practical exercises directly reinforce theoretical concepts from courses like Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, and Open Channel Flow.
Environmental Engineering Laboratory
The Environmental Engineering Laboratory under BUBT's Department of Civil Engineering is dedicated to testing water and wastewater quality. Supporting undergraduate coursework, theses, and faculty research, the lab performs physical, chemical, and biological analyses including pH, turbidity, solids, BOD, COD, and arsenic. Following APHA and ASTM standard methods, it provides students with hands-on experience in environmental monitoring, pollution assessment, and water treatment engineering.
Transportation Engineering Laboratory
The Transportation Engineering Laboratory under BUBT's Department of Civil Engineering focuses on the practical evaluation of highway materials, pavement performance, and traffic engineering. Equipped for both laboratory material testing and field traffic analysis, it provides students with hands-on experience in aggregate and bitumen characterization, asphalt mix evaluation, and traffic data collection. These exercises directly reinforce theoretical concepts covered in highway and traffic engineering courses.
Practical Surveying Laboratory
The **Practical Surveying Laboratory** at BUBT provides civil engineering students with hands-on training in land surveying and geomatics. Through experiments like contouring, levelling, and total station traversing, students learn to operate precision equipment accurately. This bridging of theory and practice ensures graduates can confidently collect, process, and interpret geospatial data for real-world infrastructure projects.
