Department of English is one of the earliest and vibrant departments at BUBT. The journey started with the launching of BA (Hons) in English program in Summer Trimester of 2004 (June 2004 – September 2004) with fourteen students in the 1st intake. It happened with the dynamic leadership of the then Chairman, Prof. Abu Taher Mojumder, a former Professor of Jahangirnagar University. During this time, the other faculty members of this department were Shaila Sultana (recently working as an Associate Professor of English, IML, DU) and Mushfeka Deeba, a Lecturer at that time. Later on, other faculty members from different public and private universities enriched the department with their valuable contributions.
From then on, the department grew bit by bit in quality and quantity and the growth still continues. Now it has become a full-fledged department with sufficient number of faculty members. Among other renowned teachers who taught the students of the Dept. of English at different times were, Dr. M. Maniruzzaman, Prof. of English, JU, Dr. Sayeedur Rahman, of Dept of English, IML, DU, Dr. Syed Anwar Hossain, Dept. of History, DU, Dr. Mokaddem Hossain, Dept. of Sociology, DU, Dr. Enamul Haque, Dept. of History JU and many other scholarly personalities.
Professor Abu Taher Mojumder contributed to the progress of this department as the Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities and of Social Sciences till his death. After him, Professor Syed Anwarul Huq, a fulbrighter, former Professor of English, University of Dhaka, joined as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and since then the department has been thriving with his vibrant guidance.
On the other hand, English department has remained dynamic under the leaderships of the chairmen: Professor Abu Taher Mojumder (founder chairman), Ms. Bipasha Binte Huq, Ms. Mushfeka Deeba, Mr. Md. Abdullah Al Azad, Mr. Shawkat Ali, Mr. Monirul Huq, Dr. Mohoshin Reza, and now Ms. Amanee Khandker.
The syllabus of MA in English program was approved by the UGC on June 06, 2006. This program was introduced in Summer Semester, 2007. A year later, the UGC approved MA in ELT program on July 10, 2008. Since then it has been running with its Intake no 26 until now. The syllabus of MA in English Literature was recently approved by the UGC.
Since its very inception the department has been organizing various seminars, workshop and literary sessions along with cultural programs particularly to make the students’ curricular and extracurricular faculty enriched. Renowned academicians, literary personnel gave talks in seminars organized in the university on different occasions. The students of the department participated in various entertaining events.
The journey continues and the history is being recorded in a never ending pace.
